Discussion #1 - Bella, a vampire?

Do you think it’s reasonable of Bella to wish to become a vampire?

As I mentioned before, “Twilight” is an incredibly entertaining and original book that creates many questions; one of them raising the subject of the boundaries of love. How far would you go to prove your feelings? How much are you able to sacrifice for your loved one?
These are obviously only by-questions that lead to the main thread of the book – should Bella sacrifice her humanity to be with Edward?

That’s a tough one, I know.

On the one hand, she doesn’t even know what it is like to be a vampire; but on the other, if she’s sure Edward is the man she wants to spend her life with, then why not?! Eternity with such a hottie might repay all the pain of loosing her family and after all, isn’t it right that a family is given to you but you choose your friends?

But Bella doesn’t know if she would be strong enough to remain a vegetarian, what if she becomes a bloodsucking monster she despises as a human? She might change completely and loose everything Edward loves about her just now! She won’t blush, she might have a different scent, she will think differently, she might loose all her human reactions and the way she perceives the world… We know nothing what the Cullens were like before they became vampires; the transformation might have changed them completely!

And can you imagine the amount of pain Bella will cause Renee and Charlie when she dies to their world? Throughout the book she mentions it many times how much she worries about her mother because she’s so vulnerable… And Charlie is so happy to have Bella back… It’s really selfish of her to want it NOW!! Couldn’t she wait for a few years, she would be with Edward anyway…

Of course, it is easier said than done and the equation here is rather unfair… She found the perfect guy for her and it seems he was waiting for her for so many years… He’s different than other boys but other boys were of no interest to her, were they? Edward can’t change who he is but she can change herself… It is difficult for him to control his instincts and although he was doing well so long, one day he might easily slip. It seems that is the only solution, right?

Still, is it reasonable to make such a literally life changing decision so quickly?!

I love both Bella and Edward and I'm positive they should be together but I hated how Bella was pushing the subject - if Edward didn't want her becoming one of them why couldn't she just accept it and try to discuss rather than force everything on him!!

I think that Bella as the narrator is very difficult to follow at this point, I mean when the decision of her becoming a Cullen is made. I can understand her point of view, only because she's scared something could happen to her and she could lose Edward forever. Besides the fact that she's a 'magnet for danger', she's the easiest target, I don't blame her for wanting it so much, she just wants to be assured she'd have everything she wants. The longer she waits, the more anxious she becomes. And I don't buy this age difference thing at all. It's one of the immature/typical-17-year-old things I don't like in Bella.

Satine is making a strong point here! Bella could easily die simply by tripping and since she's aware of her clumsiness, she wants to secure her future with Edward.

I was very curious how does the transformation look like so I was very much looking forward to it, I think. (It's been a while, I can't remember my first reaction.)

But if I was Bella, I would be way more hesitant!! I know nothing about the vampire world and their needs.. I don't understand Bella's track of thoughts - she considered becoming a vampire the only solution and it took her such a short time!

Thanks for the support, sweetie :D However, I've recently had a very interesting discussion with a friend of mine on this matter and she said that it was just because Bella didn't want to get older for Edward. What's more, she claims that it's perfectly normal to think so...my conclusion is that it depends on your character. Like I said, for me the age difference is ridiculous because he's over 100 years anyway, so thinking that she'll be twenty and he remains 17 is totally irrelevant:)What I think is more interesting it's the fact that Jacob imprinted on Renesmee :D What do you think about that?

I believe Bella was only worried about her looks - she didn't want to look older than Edward. If she was 25 or older-looking people would always despise her relationship with a 17 years old boy :P That would be so ironic taking he's actually one century older! I love this spooky book! :D

I wouldn't like to be in Bella's shoes - that's one big choice to make..

Renesmee requires a separate discussion, don't you think? :P But I must say, she's brilliant and Stephenie has outgone herself with this character.

You make a strong point there - Bella doesn't know what kind of a vampire she will end up being!!

Does she eventually become one?! I'm on New Moon now :) On the other hand, don't tell me :PP

You should definitely find it out in your own time.

I read the saga very quickly because I was dying to know and in the end, I was very pleased :)

like kristen said in an interview, bella is a sadomasochist; she derives beauty from pain.

and to her, sacrificing her life is worth it because without him, there will be no her.

losing him is her biggest fear, she would do anything to not have to keep that fear.

so yeah, i think its reasonable.

Well, that's another argument I haven't considered - Bella surely is a masochist, she likes being unhappy, in fact, she very rarely smiles!
